Classes Required by the Manila Amendments

CLASSES REQUIRED BY THE MANILA AMENDMENTS

With the passage of the Manila amendments in June of 2010, training requirements for our members were enhanced.  The new STCW requirements went into effect on January 1, 2012.  Certain requirements come into effect immediately while others will be implemented at later dates.  Everything must be enforced by 2017.

Basic Safety Training (BST) Refresher

For mariners that have sufficient sea time to renew their credential (1 year sea time in the last 5 years), the Manila Amendments make it mandatory for certain parts of fire fighting and personal survival to be refreshed ashore.  The school has put into the 2012 course schedule a three day course called BST Refresher, which is designed to meet this requirement.

Basic Safety Training (BST)

For mariners that DO NOT have sufficient sea time to renew their credential (1 year sea time in the last 5 years), the Manila Amendments make it mandatory that the mariner take the entire five day course again.

Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher

For mariners that have sufficient sea time to renew their credential (1 year sea time in the last 5 years), the Manila Amendments make it mandatory for certain parts of Advanced Fire Fighting to be refreshed ashore.  The school has put into the 2012 course schedule a two day course called Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher, which is designed to meet this requirement.  This course will run, immediately following the BST Refresher Course, during the same week.  So during that week BST Refresher will run Monday – Wednesday and Adv. Fire Fighting Refresher will run Thursday and Friday.

Advanced Fire Fighting

For mariners that DO NOT have sufficient sea time to renew their credential (1 year sea time in the last 5 years), the Manila Amendments make it mandatory that the mariner re-take the entire five day Advanced Fire Fighting course.

Upgrade to Management Level

Like the deck officers, engineers are now going to be required to take training in order to upgrade their license to Management Level (Chief and First).  This five week course has been taught at the school for the last five years and is currently in the 2012 schedule.

Proficiency in Survival Craft (Lifeboatman)

For mariners that have sufficient sea time to renew their credential (1 year sea time in the last 5 years), no additional training will be required.  If you DO NOT have the required sea time you will be required to either retake the five day course or successfully complete a take home test.  The school has not scheduled this class for 2012, but if there is sufficient demand we will run it.

Leadership and Management

Renewal of a credential that will be valid on or after January 1, 2017 must provide evidence of meeting the standard of competence for leadership and management.  This course is currently under development and is expected to be ready for the 2015 calendar year.
